The Columbus Flames 14U Yeley team won its division in the Governor’s Cup State Tournament last weekend in Fort Wayne.
The Flames dropped the first game to Fort Wayne Force (Green) 4-3. Ayden Richardson, Tyler Hublar and Noah Dornfeld scored goals; and Leah Doig and Ashton Nguyen had assists.
The Flames bounced back with a 9-0 shutout of Indy Fuel 14U All Stars B. Bryce McDonald netted three goals, while Ashton Nguyen and Sawyer Patterson each had two and Tyson Tyner and Hublar each added one.
In a rematch against the Fort Wayne Force (Green), the Flames came out on top 4-2 with goals by Patterson, Richardson, McDonald and Jonah Young. That advanced the Flames to the championship game against the Evansville Thunder (White), which the Flames won 4-1 on goals by Blake Avery, Doig, Patterson and McDonald.

All of the other Columbus Flames travel youth teams also competed in the Governor’s Cup State Tournament.

Columbus Flames 14U beat PSM Force 2008 Blue 6-1 and played Evansville Thunder 14U 5-1 before falling to Evansville Thunder 2-1 in a shootout in the semifinals. Westin Davis netted four goals and one assist, Wyatt Warner and Drew Weed each recorded two goals and one assist, River Degner had one goal and two assists, Lance Kitterman and Kaitlyn Netser each added one goal and one assist, Eduardo Aranda scored one goal and William Jamerson and Cole Finney each had two assists, Jackson Wheatley was in net.
Flames 12U A tied Indy Junior Fuel Black 12U 3-3 and lost to Indy Junior Fuel Gold 6-0 and Evansville Thunder 3-2. Ryan McGhehey netted one goal and two assists; Brooks Larsh had one goal and one assist; Ethan Neumann, Rowan Correll and Simon Barnes all scored one goal; Carter Davis had three assists and Zane Lynch added two assists. Canyon Long was in net with a save percentage of 87%.
Flames 12U Peewee B beat Bloomington Blades 4-2, and Indy Junior Fuel 12U White 2-0 before falling to Bloomington Blades 6-3 the championship game to finish as reserve champions. Ayden Richardson netted five goals, Cooper Ross scored two goals, Dana Thomas recorded one goal and two assists, John Tuttle had one goal and one assist, Preston Bell notched two assists and Garrett Uy and Lilli Donica each added one assist. Gabe Marsh was in net all weekend.
Flames 10U A fell to Midwest Blackbirds AA 4-1 and Junior Fuel Gold AA 3-2 and beat Junior Fuel Black A2 5-3. Carter Harris netted three goals and one assist, Maddox Coy recorded two goals and two assists, Bentley Hampton had one goal and one assist, Logan Barringer and Keaton Grube each scored one goal, Thomas King had three asissts and Robby Orgass and Max Perex each added one assist, Caydon Long was in net.
Flames 10U B lost to Irish 10U Select 4-2, Indy Junior Fuel All Stars 3-2 and Indy Junior Fuel Red 7-2. Thomas Degner netted four goals; Luis Taqueshi and Carsen Sims each scored one goal and Avery Orgass, Luke Powers and Oliver Jamerson all added one assist. Knox Coen was in net.
Icemen win twice
The Columbus Icemen beat HSE 1-0 and Brebeuf 3-1. Evan Federle netted one goal and two assists, Alex Clark and Will Kushner each had one goal and one assist; John Ferguson scored one goal and Calijah Kenney, Carter Green, John Merrit and Cadan Graham all added one assist. Ben Blanz and Jake McMullen each were in net one game.
BROOMBALL
Hansons maintain lead
Hansons stayed on top of the Columbus Broomball League with a 6-2 win against Our Name Is Earl. Matt Street netted three goals, Rahul Bhardwaj had two and Max Warr added one for Hansons (9-1-1). Tom Kareus and Ryan Putnam scored for Earl (6-5).
Monsters of Rock remained in second place with a 3-1 win against Jennings County BC. Ben Eckhart, Zach Henderson and Tyler Rash netted goals for Monsters (7-2-2). Erik Wernke scored for Jennings (1-8-2).
CCA beat Toyota Tsunamis 6-2. Greg Thomas netted two goals, and Todd Houchin, Tim Walton, Shawn Bauman and Thom Hayes all scored once for CCA (4-5-2). Dalton McNealy and Greg McNealy had the goals for Tsunamis (2-8-1).
