Donors have given thousands of dollars to help with funeral and other expenses for two young people who were killed in a car crash in Jennings County on Friday, Feb. 11.

Halle Elliott, 19, of Louisville, Ky., and Skyler Short, 20, of Hanover, died from injuries sustained in a crash on U.S. 50 near County Road 575W, between North Vernon and Seymour.

Indiana State Police investigators say the car driven by Elliott in which Short was a passenger crossed the center line, struck the rear of an oncoming semi trailer driven by Jacob Hyman, 28, of North Vernon, then turned sideways into the path of a vehicle driven by Robert Keener, 54, of North Vernon. Keener’s vehicle struck Elliott’s vehicle, causing it to overturn.

Hyman and Keener were not injured in the crash, according to ISP.

As of Thursday, an online fundraiser that began Feb. 12 had raised more than $11,000 for Elliott’s family, and a donation site established for Short’s family on Wednesday had raised nearly $3,000.

According to GoFundMe, Elliott was a freshman at the University of Louisville. “She loved traveling, eating steak dinners, and spending time with her friends, her brother, Evan, all kids, and fluffy animals,” according to her page at gofundme.com/f/funeral-expense-for-the-elliott-family.

Short was the father of two children, a 19-month-old son a daughter born less than a month ago, according to his page established by his mother, Violet Mardello, gofundme.com/f/skyler-short.

“It breaks my heart to think that neither of his children will ever experience good memories with their father that they will actually remember. He also leaves behind a grieving family, friends and so many who loved him,” Mardello wrote. “… It is my intention to provide a beautiful ceremony and to place a beautiful head stone for his children and loved ones to visit.”
