Local Hoosier Action leader to speak at Statehouse

A Bartholomew County activist will be among the speakers today at a Statehouse rally of more than 50 urban and rural Hoosier families opposed to a bill that would ban charitable bail, which the families say will worsen the drug overdose crisis.

Jessica Savage, Bartholomew County leader for Hoosier Action, will be among the speakers at the group’s rally from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m. today at the Capitol in Indianapolis. The group opposes House Bill 1300, which would restrict charitable bail for someone charged with a crime.

“By restricting the ability of organizations and individuals to pay bail on behalf of someone arrested for a crime, HB 1300 would result in more Hoosiers forced to stay in jail just because they are poor,” Hoosier Action said in a news release.

The group’s rally plans include a children’s march around the Capitol, along with the release of its report on this year’s legislative session, “Putting Hoosier Families Last: The Indiana General Assembly in 2022.” Hoosier Action bills itself as “a nonpartisan, homegrown community organization based in Southern Indiana.”
