Bull Frogs advance at state

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North went into Friday’s preliminaries of the Boys Swimming State Finals seeded to make it back to today’s consolation round in only one of four events.

The Bull Frogs, however, made it 4 for 4. They dropped time in all four events and improved their seeds in all four to send them back to the consolation finals, which begin at 1 p.m. today at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.

Junior Daniel Utterback is a part of all four events. He qualified 15th in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 42.92 seconds), 10th in the 100 freestyle (46.45) and as part of North’s 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams.

“He set the tone right off the bat, and the team kind of followed his lead,” North coach Brett Findley said. “He set the stage for everyone.”

Utterback, sophomore Isaac Proffitt and seniors Matthew Goble and David Fry qualified 15th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:26.89). Utterback, Goble, senior Carlos Fabian Aguilar and Fry qualified 11th in the 400 freestyle relay (3:12.27).

“We had a great meet,” Findley said. “The goal was to get everybody back on Saturday. It’s tough to have a really competitive sectional like we do and still come here and drop time. The guys stepped up and did a great job. All five of them did well.”

Meanwhile, Columbus East senior Dathan Wolf also improved on his seed. Wolf moved up from 29th to 26th in the 100 backstroke after finishing in 53.54.

The top eight in each event qualified for the championship finals, while 9-through-16 made the consolation heats.
