Club Olympia trio swims in southern California meet

Three Club Olympia athletes competed last weekend in a four-day meet hosted by The Swim Team (TST) Barracudas at El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California.

Josh Pendleton, Tony Machavariani and Shreyan Kulkarni met the meet’s high time standards and were able to compete against some of California’s and the Western United States’ best age group swimmers in the International Swim Coaches Association’s (ISCA) West Coast Elite Showcase Classic. TST Barracudas is the team where Columbus resident Brady Beyer currently is training.

The three Club Olympia athletes performed well enough in the four days of prelims and finals events to finish seventh in the men’s standings and 12th in the team standings among nearly 30 clubs from both southern and northern California, Hawaii, Colorado and Missouri.

Pendleton scored 99 points while winning nine of hist 10 events, including the the 100 freestyle (where he is currently the 26th ranked 11-year-old in the country), 200 freestyle (sixth), 500 freestyle (second), 1000 freestyle (second), 200 individual medley (25th), 400 IM (43rd), 50 butterfly (59th), 100 butterfly (21st) and 200 butterfly (17th). Pendleton swam several personal-best times throughout the weekend and was the 11-year-old High Point winner.

Machavariani scored 95 points and won seven of his 10 events, including the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. He also took second in the 100 IM and 200 IM. Despite a disqualification in one event, he still placed second in the 9U High Point race.

Kulkarni scored 48 points while finishing in the top five in four events including the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 50 backstroke and top 10 in five events including the 50 breaststroke, 100 breastroke, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 100 IM.

Those three athletes returned this week to Columbus to finish training, along with several other Club Olympia athletes, for the upcoming Indiana Swimming Age State Championships, which will be March 11-13 at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.

SPEED SKATING

Full Throttle competes

The Full Throttle Speed Skating team competed in last weekend’s Northbrook Short Track Open in Northbrook, Illinois. The regional meet included teams from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, Colorado, Washington DC and California. Most of the team was grouped with older kids at longer distances than in typical age-based meets.

Gabe Marimoto Taqueushi competed in the 170m, 255m, 340m and 425m distances and advanced to the A finals, finishing first for his group.

Vivaan Gupta and Meredith Schwab competed at 222m, 333m, 500m and 777m distances for their respective groups. Both skaters advanced to the B finals for their groups.

Bryan Wang and Luis Marimoto Taqueushi competed at 333m, 500m, 777m and 1000m distances for their respective groups. Both advanced to the B finals for their groups.

Full Throttle Speed Skating Team practices at the Hamilton Center Ice Arena and is coached by Taylor and Mikey Burdekin of Columbus. Their next meet is next weekend at the Land of Lincoln event in Champaign, Illinois.

HOCKEY

Squirt A takes third

Columbus Flames Squirt A finished third in last weekend’s Big Bear Gasoline Alley Tournament. They fell to Junior Fuel Black 5-2 and tied Decatur Flames 2-2, Kirkwood Stars 2-2 and Decatur Flames again 3-3. Carter Harris and Max Perez each netted three goals and one assist; Maddox Coy recorded two goals and one assist; Keaton Grube had one goal and one assist; Logan Barringer notched two assists and Dalton Larsh, Thomas King and Robby Orgass all added one assist. Cayden Long was in net saving 59 of 70 shots for a save percentage of 84%.

Columbus Flames Bantam B played Louisville Ice Cardinals and won 4-1 and tied 1-1. Tyler Hubler netted two goals; Sawyer Patterson and Tyson Tyner each had one goal and one assist; Bryce McDonald scored one goal and Blake Avery, Noah Dornfield and Leah Doig all added one assist. Lane Barringer was in net.

Columbus Flames Peewee A lost to Columbus (Ohio) Comets 11-3 and 8-0. Ryan McGhehey netted one goal and one assist, Carter Davis and Rowan Correll each scored one goal and Simon Barnes and Kai Bergmann each added one assist. Canyon Long was in net with a save percentage of 69%

Columbus Flames Peewee B fell to Columbus (Ohio) Voyagers 4-1 and 3-1. Garrett Uy had one goal and one assist, Ayden Richardson scored one goal and Cooper Ross added one assist. Gabe Marsh was in net.

Columbus Icemen fell to the Bloomington Blades 3-1. Will Kushner scored the goal off assists from Cadam Grahamn and John Ferguson. Jake McMullen was in net, saving 24 of 26 shots for a 92% save percentage. The 3rd goal was an empty net.

BROOMBALL

Playoff schedule set

The Columbus Broomball League playoffs will kick off today with first-round and semifinal games.

Our Name Is Earl will play Jennings County BC at 4:30 p.m., with the winner facing Monsters of Rock at 6:30 p.m. CCA will play Toyota Tsunamis at 5:30 p.m., with the winner meeting Hansons at 7:30 p.m.

Hansons and Monsters of Rock maintained the top two seeds after tying each other 3-3 in last week’s regular-season finale. Matt Street netted two goals, and Keith Henry had the other for Hansons (9-1-2). Ben Eckhart scored twice and Rob Jones once for Monsters (7-2-3).

Our Name Is Earl (7-5) beat Toyota Tsunamis 6-2 behind three goals from Darren Eckerly and one each from Tom Kareus, Noah Marsh and Carter Kareus. Jimmy Robertson and Greg McNealy scored for Tsunamis (2-9-1).

CCA and Jennings County BC played to a 2-2 tie. Greg Thomas and Sam Hayes had the goals for CCA (4-5-3). Darien Castetter and Kyle Hunterman scored for Jennings (1-8-3).
