COLUMBUS, Ind. — Fire caused extensive damage to a home on Werner Avenue at 6:34 p.m. Saturday.
Columbus firefighters were sent to 731 Werner Ave. where they found a single-story home with heavy fire showing from the gable roof and eaves, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.
As firefighters prepared to make entry to the home they learned that the occupants of the home had escaped without injury.
With heavy fire within the structure, including fire in the home’s attic space, firefighters moved into the home for an interior attack, but due to conditions on the exterior, all firefighters were ordered out of the building, Wilson said.
Working in below freezing temperatures, firefighters continued to apply water from the ground as well as from an elevated position with an aerial ladder truck. The fire was marked under control within an hour. Once the blaze was under control, firefighters re-entered the home to manage hot spots of smoldering materials left inside the residence, Wilson said.
No injuries were reported at the scene. The occupants of the home were assessed by paramedics at the the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damages to the home are extensive and firefighters estimated the home would be a total loss. Damages are estimated at $100,000, Wilson said.
