Chloe Brookbank: Muscatatuck County Park an easy ride into local history

Chloe Brookbank

Muscatatuck County Park is one of the most beautiful sites in Jennings County, and the park helps us to keep fit, entertained and one with nature.

The former Vinegar Mill State Park was adopted as Indiana’s fourth state park in 1921. It was named after the early pioneer stone cutting mill located on the banks of the Muscatatuck River.

The year after that, the name was officially changed to Muscatatuck State Park. It was deeded to Jennings County as a county park in 1968.

Included in the park are camping grounds, trails for walking and biking, rock climbing, and a community building.

Bike trails are designed for different levels of expertise, starting with beginner, intermediate, and advanced biker.

There is no admission fee to access the park.

The Walnut Grove one-room school was moved to the park in 1991 and the park received a state historical marker in 1999.

The campgrounds have 26 spots available, all with water and electricity.

In late 2016, construction on the mile-long paved trail was completed from downtown, so that you can ride on blacktop the entire length to the park and away from road traffic.
