Two Scottsburg residents accused of shoplifting $1,200 in distilled liquor from North Vernon Walmart

The North Vernon Police Department sent out a statement Tuesday afternoon updating the name and identity of one of the suspects. Here is the updated story:

NORTH VERNON Two Scott County residents were arrested on theft charges after attempting to push a tote full of concealed distilled liquor out of Walmart Supercenter on Monday night.

North Vernon police were sent to the store at 2310 N. State Road 3 at 10:36 p.m. Monday, said Sgt. Andrew Richmond, North Vernon police spokesman.

The officers were told the suspects had pushed a tote full of items out of the store without scanning the items in the tote.

Officer Christopher Knight was able to find the suspect vehicle after it left the store and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle on Highway 50 West, Richmond said.

Sgt. Lucas Newsom also responded and assisted Knight at the traffic stop. During the stop, two suspects were identified, Zackie White, 37, of Scottsburg, and Kaitlyn Grider, 32, of Scottsburg, Richmond said.

Knight and Newsom located the tote along with two vacuums and other small items that had not been paid for. The officers discovered that 35 bottles of various distilled liquor had been concealed in the tote totaling approximately $1,200, Richmond said. The total amount of recovered property was about $1,800.

White and Grider were arrested and transported to the Jennings County Jail, and the recovered property was returned to the North Vernon Walmart.

White and Grider were each accused of Level 6 felony theft and were being held in the Jennings County Jail in lieu of $1,055 cash bond each. Grider was also accused of Level 6 felony identity deception later Tuesday after police determined her correct identity, police said.
