These are just a few of the items recently reported in The Republic newspaper:
1. Bartholomew County’s representative in Congress was prepared to vote against a bill that would fund aid to Ukraine and finance federal agencies for the rest of the year.
2. The state representative for Columbus voted in favor of repealing the firearm carry permit requirement.
3. 100 Republicans in the Indiana General Assembly have written Gov. Eric Holcomb to ask for a special session if the Supreme Court rolls back Roe v. Wade.
4. The Bartholomew County Council meeting “became heated” as the council members discussed tax abatements for two companies.
People, please wake up! In the words of David Byrne, “This ain’t no party. This ain’t no disco. This ain’t no fooling around.” You might be interested in the details about the above points:
1. Rep. Greg Pence failed to mention that the bill containing aid to Ukraine was a bipartisan compromise and instead said “Nancy Pelosi crafted this bill behind closed doors in the dead of night.” I guess he just forgot the role that Mitch McConnell played in crafting the bill.
2. After the superintendent of the Indiana State Police and other law enforcement agencies let it be known that they opposed repealing permits to carry firearms, many thought it was a dead issue. But Rep. Ryan Lauer and State Sen. Eric Koch, at the last minute, managed to pull it through. This bill will allow anyone over the age of 18 to carry a gun in public except for reasons such as a felony conviction or a restraining order.
3. Our 76% male, 73% Republican, part-time legislature wants to make sure that any Hoosier woman seeking an abortion is denied that option as soon as possible. One-hundred of the 110 Republican lawmakers signed a letter to the governor requesting a special legislative session if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
4. I attended the County Council meeting on March 8. I think The Republic was kind in describing it as “heated.” I would say the members were quite rude to one another and to the people making presentations. One member abstained from voting because she was unprepared. As the longest-serving member of the council, one would think she would be on top of things.
Bartholomew County and the state of Indiana have been ruled by one political party for far too long. There are serious issues that need to be addressed. To further quote Congressman Greg Pence, “It’s time for a change in Congress.” I would suggest that it’s time for a change in all of Bartholomew County’s elected officials, starting with Congressman Greg Pence.
