Two locals selected for Top 60 Workout

Two local boys basketball seniors have been invited to play in the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 60 Workout on Sunday.

Columbus North’s Sam King and South Decatur’s Hunter Johnson will participate either in the 1 to 3 p.m. session or the 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. session at Marian University in Indianapolis.

King led the Bull Dogs with 15.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 0.7 blocks and added 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game this season. Johnson led the state with 31.9 points per game, led the Cougars with 9.6 rebounds and added 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals.

The 1 to 3 p.m. session primarily is for players in northern and southern Indiana, and the 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. session is mostly for players in central Indiana. Both sessions are open to the public, and admission is $8 for adults or $5 for students.

Locals to compete in state indoor meet

Columbus North is seeded first in three boys and one girls event for the big-school division of Saturday’s Hoosier State Relays, Indiana’s unofficial indoor state track and field meet.

Defending state outdoor champion Tucker Smith is seeded first in the boys shot put, and the Bull Dogs are first in the boys 4×800-meter relay and distance medley relay. Evan Carr is seeded 18th in 3,200.

The North girls are seeded first in the 4×800 relay and third in the distance medley relay. Katherine Rumsey is ninth, Alyssa Green 13th and Abby Jacobi 18th in the girls 3,200.

In the small-school division, Hauser’s Cameron Toole is seeded third and Aleck Lopez fourth in the boys long jump. Brown County is ninth in the 4×800 relay, 10th in the distance medley relay and 21st in the boys 4×400 relay.

The small school meet is at 10 a.m., and the big school meet is at 4 p.m. Saturday at Indiana University’s Gladstein Fieldhouse.

Walden earns athletic administrator award

For the second time in three years, Edinburgh athletics director David Walden has been named Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association District 4 Athletic Administrator of the Year.

Walden, who also won in 2020, was selected by fellow District 4 athletics directors at the September at District 4 meeting. District 4 consists of 21 counties mostly in southeast Indiana.

Whiteland athletics director David Edens nominated Walden for the award.

“It’s nice,” Walden said. “It’s a great honor to be honored by your fellow colleagues. It’s nice to have your fellow ADs vote for you. I’ve had great mentors. (Current Columbus East athletics director) Pete Huse was a great mentor when he was at Greenwood.”

Hauser-Edinburgh scrimmage moved

The Edinburgh at Hauser baseball scrimmage that was originally scheduled for Monday and postponed to Tuesday has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. Friday.

North to host cheer tryouts

Columbus North will be holding Cheerleading Tryouts on March 31. Forms are due Friday, and there will be a clinic on Tuesday.

All-Star girls game set for Monday

The All-Area All-Star Girls Basketball game, featuring most of the players from The Republic All-Area team, will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Columbus Christian.

The All-Area All-Star boys game was played on Monday. The beneficiary of this year’s games is North junior cheerleader Ariel Roberts, who is battling an embryonal brain tumor.

North girls basketball sets meeting for incoming freshmen

Columbus North coach Brett White is holding a brief informational meeting for incoming ninth-grade girls basketball players and their parents at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the North High School cafeteria. Players should enter Door 1, the school’s main entrance.

The meeting will include information about upcoming team activities in the spring and summer. Coaches also will be sizing and ordering practice gear that is used during the summer games and throughout the season. Players should have payment for practice gear with them at the meeting.

Columbus East coach Danny Brown will hold a meeting for incoming freshman girls basketball players at 6:30 p.m. March 31 in the team’s locker room at East High School.

Columbus North will hold a football callout meeting for all incoming ninth-through-12th-graders at 7 p.m. April 6 in the North High School cafeteria.
