COLUMBUS, Ind. — A house fire on Columbus’ west side caused heavy damage to a garage on Thursday.

Columbus firefighters were sent at 12:28 p.m. Thursday to 4452 Mallard Point on a report of a vehicle fire inside an attached residential garage, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and reported a working residential fire with heavy flames visible from the garage area of the home. Firefighters brought the fire under control within 10 minutes after arrival.

The homeowner told investigators he had been working on the fuel system of a vehicle parked inside the garage, Wilson said. Investigators believe fuel ignited during maintenance on the vehicle, he said, resulting in homeowner evacuating the residence.

Investigators said that three vehicles were damaged in the fire, one of which was parked outside the garage. The fire damage within the garage was significant, Wilson said. The fire did extend into a portion of the home’s living space.

Damage to the home, as well as vehicle and garage contents, is estimated at $200,000, Wilson said. One firefighter was injured at the scene. Investigators have listed the cause of the fire as accidental.

Agencies that assisted at the scene include the Columbus Police Department, Columbus Regional Health Ambulance Service, Columbus City Utilities, Duke Energy and CenterPoint.
