Loud ‘boom’ remains a mystery

Columbus officials received multiple calls after a loud “boom” was heard across Columbus at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Camp Atterbury in Johnson County, where at times training drills result in large booms behind heard throughout Columbus, denied that the sound came from there. Camp Atterbury officials said there were no explosions or training drills resulting in noise at that time.

Columbus Municipal Airport Director Brian Payne said he had no clue about whether the sound could have been a sonic boom from an aircraft above Columbus.

“We’ve been getting all kinds of calls about this,” he said.

The noise was heard in multiple counties, according to reports Columbus City Hall received, and was heard as far away as Bloomington, where Monroe County officials were checking with emergency management, but said they found nothing amiss in their county.

So far, first responders have not been able to find anything in the several-county area, that includes Brown, Johnson and Monroe counties, that could have caused the noise.
