Architecture program hosts guest lectures

Indiana University’s J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program will host two more guest lectures this month.

The Miller M.Arch Lecture Series is free and open to the public. Thursday’s lecture features artist and urban planner Danicia Monét. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the former Republic building in downtown Columbus. Light refreshments will be provided.

The architecture program will host artist Soumya Netrabile at 6:30 p.m. April 21 at the former Republic building. Architects Sarah Dunn and Martin Felsen of UrbanLab also spoke at the school as part of the series on April 7.

The architecture program described Danicia Monét as “an arts and culture ambassador,” urban planner, independent researcher, creative director and “interaction designer” based in Philadelphia.

Monét holds a bachelor’s degree in urban planning and Spanish and a master’s in nonprofit management. She is pursuing her Ph.D. on the “User-Experience of Race.”

“Her applied research is based on the context of Race &Space – Growing Cultural Literacy in the Built Environment,” program officials said. “As a fellow with Americans for the Arts and Transportation for America she challenges the ideas of public space and place-making to encourage a people-centric status quo.”

Artist Soumya Netrabile was born in Bangalore, India and emigrated to the United States with her parents at the age of seven. She has studied at both Rutger University’s College of Engineering and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

“Playing with different approaches to painting, she explores relationships between the body, terrain, and the natural world,” the event release stated. “Recently her work has been leading into meditations on the ecosystems of the forest and garden.”

Netrabile’s art has been shown at the Andrew Rafacz Gallery in Chicago, Part 2 Gallery in Oakland, Anat Ebgi Gallery in Los Angeles and Karma Gallery in New York City. Her work is included in both national and international collections.
