Council to host Youth Empowerment Summit

About 100 high school students from Bartholomew County will soon spend a full day learning about leadership and personal growth.

The Council for Youth Development, along with other partners, will host a one-day Youth Empowerment Summit at the Columbus Learning Center on April 29 from 8:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. The day will feature “engaging activities designed to build leadership skills, inspire personal action and expand the vision of a welcoming, safe, and supportive community for all.”

The opening program includes a welcome from Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop. The keynote speaker for the event is Tyshaun Allen with Taylor Bros. Construction Co., Inc. and the Columbus Area Multi-Ethnic Organization. Allen will speak on “Finding Your Own Path to Success.”

During the event, students will have the opportunity to rotate through three breakout sessions facilitated by local experts and supported by Youth Ambassadors. Per CYD’s website, the sessions will cover financial security, time management and “building a sense of belonging.”

The summit also includes a panel of four recent graduates who will speak on life after high school, with the discussion moderated by Columbus North High School Senior and Youth Ambassador Zacaria Scruggs. Additionally, there will be a ceremony to announce and recognize the 2022-23 Youth Ambassador Cohort.

The Youth Empowerment Summit is a free event hosted by CYD, the African American Fund of Bartholomew County, the Columbus Human Rights Commission, Tu Futuro, the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. and the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. It was also made possible through grants from the Indiana Department of Health Title V, Bartholomew County Substance Abuse Council Prevention Initiatives, and the Mark and Wendy Elwood Foundation.
