North girls win invite

The Columbus North girls pulled out a close three-way battle Saturday to win the seven-team Pike Invitational.

The 10th-ranked Bull Dogs scored 159 points to 147 for Pike and 144 1/2 for No. 15 Avon. No. 1 Plainfield won the boys meet with 152 points to 119 for No. 3 North and 103 for Avon.

Kylah Lawson won the long jump (15 feet, 11 inches), Moana Steele took the shot put (38-1), Brianna Newell captured the 1,600 meters (5 minutes, 13.86 seconds), Lily Baker won the 800 (2:22.83) and Julia Kiesler took the 3,200 (11:47.78) to lead the Bull Dog girls. Baker, Newell, Klaus and Kyliegh Wolf captured the 4×800 relay (9:30.91).

Tucker Smith led the North boys with wins in the shot (68-4 1/4) and discus (158-0). Clayton Guthrie took the 1,600 (4:49.39), Matt Newell captured the 800 (2:00.20), Sam Hobbeheydar won the 3,200 (10:23.84) and Matt Newell, Guthrie, Kellen Hottell and Mateo Mendez took the 4×800 relay (8:05.11).

Meanwhile, a second unit from North competed in Brown County’s Talon Relays. The Bull Dog boys won the 4×1,600 relay (21:46.90). Brown County took the distance medley relay (11:12.42) and 4×800 relay (8:40.06).

North’s Ellen White won the 3,200 (11:56.07), and the Bull Dogs took the 4×1,600 (22:48.59), distance medley (14:32.77) and 4×800 (10:49.75) relays. Brown County captured the sprint medley relay (2:00.53).

BASEBALL

North downs Millers

NOBLESVILLE — Columbus North broke open a close game with four runs in the second inning and went on to post an 8-1 win at Noblesville.

Will Baker threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and did not allow and earned run for the Bull Dogs (8-2-1). Tyler Blythe had two hits, and Dyllan Redmon and Trent Bodart each had two RBIs.

Olympians split pair

JASPER — Columbus East dropped a pair of close games in the Jasper Invitational, falling to Class 4A No. 5 Jasper 1-0 and Evansville Central 3-1.

Ethan Ianni and Will Boyer combined on a three-hitter against Jasper, but the Wildcats plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Ianni had the lone hit for the Olympians.

East (4-7-1) outhit Evansville Central 8-7. Josh Luedeke went 2 for 3 with a double.

Crusaders top Jets JV

HOPE — The Hauser JV outhit the Columbus Christian varsity 11-10, but the Crusaders posted a 14-6 victory.

Brandon Rehlander went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Peyton Rehlander went 2 for 4, Levi Hargis went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and Izak Hargis had two RBIs for Columbus Christian (3-3). Jordan Burton picked up the win.

Zach Sims went 2 for 3, Jayden Blair went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Collin Buck went 2 for 4 with a double, Lucas Christian went 2 for 4 and Pedro Oliveria had two RBIs for the Jets JV (0-4).

Lancers get first win

EDINBURGH —Edinburgh notched its first win of the season an 18-2, six-inning victory against Eminence.

Jarrett Turner went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, Nick Detling went 2 for 3 with a double, Landen Burton went 2 for 4 with a double and Caleb Turner had a home run and four RBIs and Riley Palmeter went 2 for 5 for the Lancers. Ian Buchanan and Palmeter combined on a five-hitter.

In its second game of the day, Edinburgh (1-8) fell to Indianapolis Lutheran 27-1 in five innings.

Cougars sweep Shiners

GREENSBURG — South Decatur swept a doubleheader from Rising Sun, winning 12-2 in five innings in the opener and 7-6 in the second game.

Devin Pate threw a three-hitter in the opener. Zaydun Sharp went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Dale Peters picked up the win in the second game for the Cougars (10-2). Evan Wullenweber earned the save.

Panthers split DH

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County bounced back from a 9-7 loss to East Central in the opener with an 11-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader.

Carson McNulty and Logan McIntosh each went 2 for 4 in the opener. Cole Sigler had two RBIs.

In the second game, Sigler went 3 for 4 with a double, McIntosh went 3 for 4, Jacob Vogel went 2 for 4 with a double and McNulty went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs for the Panthers (10-5). Matt Hines had a home run and three RBIs.

SOFTBALL

Olympians win twice

Columbus East swept a doubleheader from Franklin, winning 10-4 and 5-4.

Kaylee Cole went 3 for 3 with a double and a triple in the opener. Kenzie Foster went 3 for 5 with a triple, Savanna Sullivan went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Mackenzie Sigman had two RBIs.

Foster went 2 for 4 in the second game for the Olympians (4-9). Cole smacked a home run, and Sigman had two RBIs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.

North splits pair

GREENWOOD — Class 4A No. 4 Columbus North bounced back from a 3-0 loss to 4A No. 11 Center Grove with a 5-3 win against Fishers in the Center Grove Invitational.

Pitcher Maddy Rutan had the lone hit for the Bull Dogs against Center Grove.

Kaylee Cowan went 3 for 3 with a double, and Rutan went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs for North (11-2) against Fishers. Rachel Cowan threw a four-hitter.

Jets get two wins

EDINBURGH — Class A No. 11 Hauser picked up a 14-2, five-inning Mid-Hoosier Conference win against Edinburgh, then blanked Indianapolis Lutheran 10-0, also in five innings.

The Jets overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring all 14 of their runs in the third inning against the Lancers. Lucie Asher went 3 for 4 with a double, Hannah Taylor went 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs and Maley Jordan went 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs. Paige McDaniel and Kaydence Gates combined on a four-hitter.

MacKenzie Bieker went 2 for 2, and Carly Cowan had a home run and two RBIs for Edinburgh.

McDaniel, Gates and Madison Hollman combined on a two-hit shutout against Lutheran. Asher went 3 for 3 with two doubles, Kenze Bostic went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs, Reagan Johnson went 3 for 4 and Taylor had a home run and four RBIs for Hauser (7-2).

The Lancers (5-7) bounced back from their loss to Hauser with a 10-4 win against Lutheran. Gracie Crawhorn went 2 for 2 with two home runs and two RBIs, Kyah Streeval went 2 for 3 with a home run and Cowan added a double and two RBIs. Bieker threw a five-hitter.

Panthers rout Milan

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County pounded out 30 hits in two games in sweeping Milan 15-0 and 16-0, both in five innings.

Kenzie Matern and Brooke Moore combined on a one-hitter in the opener. Delaynee McCreary went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs, Grace George went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, Alexis Carson went 2 for 4, and Lainey Gresham had three RBIs.

Kassidy Beal threw a four-hitter in the second game for the Panthers (5-6). George went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Matern went 2 for 4 and Gresham had two RBIs.

South Decatur falls

GREENSBURG — South Decatur dropped a doubleheader to Rising Sun, falling 18-6 in six innings and 11-1 in five innings.

Brooklyn Powers went 2 for 2 with a home run, and Loryn Pate went 2 for with a double in the opener. Lakota Henry had three RBIs.

The Cougars (1-7) were limited to two hits in the second game, doubles by Kassidy Haley and Henry.

Trinity splits pair

AUSTIN — Class A co-No. 9 Trinity Lutheran split a pair of games, beating Austin 9-3 and falling to Mitchell 14-1 in five innings.

Kamzi Gross had three hits and four RBIs, and Morgan Brewer added two hits against Austin. Grace Lance and Gross combined on a four-hitter.

Mitchell scored 12 times in the first two innings and limited the Cougars (6-3) to six hits.

GIRLS TENNIS

North takes second

INDIANAPOLIS — No. 2 Columbus North finished second in the Park Tudor Invitational. No. 4 Jasper won with 21 points to 17 for the Bull Dogs, 16 for No. 5 Park Tudor, 14 for No. 3 South Bend St. Joseph’s and 13 for No. 9 Fishers.

Kathryn Wilson won all three of her matches in straight sets to win the No. 2 singles position. Ashlie Wilson at No. 1 singles and Annabelle Sun and Sydney Cooper at No. 2 doubles each went 2-1 to place second.

North’s Aya Saad went 2-1 and finished fifth at No. 3 singles. Tiffany Fu and Leah George went 1-2 and took sixth at No. 1 doubles.

Red Devils top East

Columbus East pulled out a win at No. 1 doubles, but Jeffersonville took the other four matches to claim a 4-1 victory.

Cathrine Millwood and Katey Rieckers beat Alexis Evans and Abby Leep 6-3, 3-6 (10-2) at No. 1 doubles for the Olympians (1-7).

East’s Katie Hong fell to Addie Rose 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Shruthika Kumar lost to Eva Ellis 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Olivia Middendorf fell to Kirsten Elder 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Ashlynn Waddle and Betsy Hoene lost to Hayley Adams and Sydney Adams 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Panthers blank Eagles

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County won all five matches in straight sets in a 5-0 win against Austin.

Reagan Brown beat Mayci Furnish 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Tatum Brown topped Brooklyn Begley 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Mia Silvey downed Lydia Luedman 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the Panthers (4-4).

Jennings’ Maria Ecker Alberti beat Ashley Rice and Evelyn Ousley 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Caitlyn Shuck and Amy Vogel defeated Hannah Queberman and Emma Smith 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Lancers fall to Braves

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh won the No. 1 singles match, but Indian Creek took the other four in handing the Lancers a 4-1 defeat.

Jessica Walsh beat Lauren Lewis 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles for the Lancers (3-4).

Edinburgh’s Bethany Burton fell to Lauren Foster at No. 1 singles, and Jillian Turner lost to Zoe Rayback at No. 3 singles, both by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Alyssa Funkhouser and Peyton Bryant fell to Olivia Perry and Emilee Scott 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Zoey Sida and Gracie Myers lost to Avery Burress and Addyson Tunell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
