Letter: Local library’s teen section makes community better place

My co-facilitator, Bajorn Gaylord, and I are teaching faculty members at Columbus Signature Academy New Tech High School. We just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the Teen Section at the Bartholomew County Public Library. This year, our ninth-grade students at Columbus Signature Academy have been the beneficiaries of this rich community resource.

Recently, we reached out to Christina Kelley for help finding titles for a couple of reluctant readers. That same day, she had a stack of high-interest titles and graphic novels that we offered to a few students who self-reported that they “do not read.” Well, guess what? They devoured these books and we were thrilled to hear that they loved them.

Subsequently, we have brought in more books from the Teen Section with the same result. New readers were born because of Christina and her colleagues.

Additionally, the space itself is extraordinary. It is welcoming, comfortable, and friendly. The staff will put together a box of books and other media for any teen upon request, and they do so with immense enthusiasm.

We would encourage any reluctant teen reader, or parent of one, to utilize this resource.

Thank you, Christina, and the rest of the staff in the Teen Section. Our community is a better place because of you.
