EDINBURGH

Dorothy Bateman (107) – Edinburgh, Ind.

On May 7, 2022, Dorothy Esther Bateman went to be with our heavenly Father.

Dorothy was born on February 8, 1915 in Daviess County, Indiana. She graduated from Washington High School in 1933 and lived most of her first 98 years in Washington before moving to Edinburgh with her daughter, Judy. She spent 74 years with her devoted husband, Archie.

Dorothy and Archie were faithful members of Bethel North United Methodist Church and helped organize the annual “Smorgasbord Dinner” for several years.

In the early days, Dorothy worked as a telephone switchboard operator for Indiana Bell. In more recent years, she enjoyed the convenience of talking to family on her cell phone and playing Candy Crush on her IPad.

Dorothy enjoyed several past times throughout her life including gardening, fishing, reading, working puzzles, and making the most delicious blackberry cobblers. She also blessed her family with many hand stitched quilts, and beautiful crocheted snowflakes.

Always an active couple, Dorothy and Archie enjoyed spending time together. They loved to play cards with friends. They were also known for their prolific blackberry bushes, and their frequent fishing trips to Dogwood Lake. Dorothy never shied away from baiting her own hook or taking her fish off. She also never let Archie forget when she out fished him.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Judy Eaton of Edinburgh, a daughter-in-law Judy Bateman Whiting (Richard) of Chandler, granddaughter Tracy Cron (Wendell) of Chandler, grandsons Nathan Eaton (Anna) of Columbus, and Brent Bateman of St. Louis. Dorothy leaves seven great grandchildren, Christopher Bedwell (Tiffany), Adam Cron (Kyla), Lauren Beavers (Austin), Olivia Bateman, Kaden Eaton (Claire), Alexa Eaton, and Macy Eaton. She also leaves seven great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Wilda Wainman, her husband John Archie Bateman, son John Bateman, son-in-law Jim Eaton, grandson Christopher Eaton, sisters Iva Mae Wilson, Helen Wainman, Eva Snider, brothers William Wainman, Clarence Wainman, Howard Wainman, and Harold Wainman.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at Sugarland Memory Gardens in Washington, IN.
