Columbus firefighters, police, and Dunlap & Co. construction workers are shown rescuing a local man from Clifty Creek Wednesday afternoon.

A 51-year-old Columbus man was transported by Lifeline helicopter to Indianapolis Wednesday afternoon after he was found in about 2 feet of water in Clifty Creek, on U.S. 31 south of 10th St.

Columbus police and firefighters, along with Columbus Township firefighters, were called to the scene at 1:04 p.m. where they found the man in the water about 50 feet downstream from a bridge where the man’s car was located on the U.S. 31 bridge over the creek.

The man could not tell first responders how he got into the water, and an investigation continues as to whether he was struck by a vehicle on the bridge and knocked into the water or somehow fell from the bridge, firefighters said.

A group of Force Construction workers waded into the creek to the assist the man before firefighters arrived. The man was taken to the bank, and then to a Columbus Regional Hospital ambulance for assessment, before being transported by helicopter to Indianapolis.

Also assisting at the scene was the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department.
