Volunteer drivers needed to transport local veterans

Volunteers are needed to drive a minivan transporting veterans to medical appointments in Indianapolis, the Bartholomew County Veterans Office said.

Due to an increase in demand for the service, the office is looking for volunteer drivers. Volunteers must furnish a copy of their driver’s license and be approved through the county’s insurance company to drive. Volunteers may drive as often as they like, whether a few times a year or multiple days a month.

Once approved, new volunteers will be filled in on the process then learn the ropes by riding with a seasoned driver transporting veterans to the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Interested volunteer drivers should call the county veterans office at 812-379-1540, or walk-ins are welcome. The office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.
