COLUMBUS, Ind. — Families headed to NexusPark’s parking lot Tuesday night for the City of Columbus Public Safety Family Fun Day.

Columbus police, firefighters and other public safety personnel were available to answer questions and youngsters were able to explore police cars, firetrucks and ambulances, and ask questions about the vehicles.

A steady crowd was at the three-hour event, with visitors also able to learn more about E-911 dispatchers, and receive information from Turning Point Domestic Violence Services and Safe Kids Bartholomew County, in conjunction with Dorel Juvenile.

The event featured equipment displays from the various departments and a visit from one of the Columbus Police Department K9s and handlers. The local SWAT team, made up of city and county deputies, was also on hand for the event. Columbus Regional Hospital had an ambulance at the event, along with city police cars and fire trucks.

Child safety seat inspections were also offered at the event.

Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman, said the event is held in collaboration with “National Night Out,” in which the community is invited to learn more about public safety by visiting with police, firefighters and others around the time when schools reopen.
