Letter: Massachusetts visitor praises Columbus’ honesty, hospitality

Every once in a while you catch someone doing something right that is worth a shout out. My wife and I are from the Boston area and stayed in Columbus recently, visiting my son who has an internship at Honda.

At Jay C, I didn’t have a shopper’s card and the gentleman behind me offered to let me use his, welcomed me, and asked are there any things I’d like to do. I mentioned that we like farmers markets, and he suggested the Columbus one next to City Hall on Saturday. Yours was a real gem, plus a bonus of the guitar player covering James Taylor (a Massachusetts native) while getting my lemonade shake.

We bought some steaks from Fleming Family Beef. While waiting in line at Singing Crust, which turned out to be some really good bread, the man from Fleming, who I am guessing is Dan Fleming based on the receipt, comes up to us and tells us we gave him $200 instead of $100 because two of the new bills were stuck together, and he returns the extra $100. What a pleasant surprise.

“That’s the Midwest,” said my work colleague, who had lived in the area.

In my book, Columbus, Indiana gets five stars for their hospitality and honesty.

PS: The reviews on the steaks were a big thumbs up.
