Free haircuts and backpacks set for July 30

Free haircuts for local students will be available and a limited number of free backpacks will be given away as part of back-to-school outreach through Calvary Community Church. Barber Peter Soler of Uppercuts will be doing the haircuts between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the shop at 1453 Washington St

Those wanting cuts must pick up a voucher at the church at 1031 Chestnut St. between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. July 30, according to organizers. Backpacks also must be picked up at the church.

Calvary has done the backpack giveaway and free haircuts as a community service for the past several years. In the past, it also has organized a back-to-school block party that has attracted as many as 500 people.

“It’s always good to be able to give back,” Soler said when the outreach began in 2018. “God has been good to me and blessed me, so I am just returning the favor.”
