North, East girls cited for good sportsmanship

Riley Schumm

Last week’s Columbus East-Columbus North girls soccer game ended in a tie, but according to referee Derek Etherington, there was a clear winner — sportsmanship.

Etherington named a player from each school for displaying good sportsmanship in his report to the IHSAA. He cited North senior center back Riley Schumm and East junior midfielder Ruth Federle.

Ruth Federle

“For the crosstown rivalry game between Columbus North and Columbus East, I want to commend all of the players on both sides for their exceptional sportsmanship with their level of play,” Etherington wrote. “For many big rivalry games, teams can often resort to certain scheme of tactics, doing anything to get the win. Although there was no doubt both teams were hungry for the bragging rights, both teams recognized the importance of players finishing the game healthy, leading with a level of respect towards their opponent and setting an example that is sure to make the community proud.

“I’d like to extend an additional recognition of exemplary behavior to CN #16 (Riley Schumm) and CE #19 (Ruth Federle). Both of these ladies carried a smile on their face throughout the entire match, and their charismatic attitudes were a welcomed change-of-pace in a game where that is very often removed. They showed excellent leadership to their teammates and shared words of encouragement and calmness to them when the intensity of the match began to rise.

“As a referee, I truly appreciate their conversation with myself and the crew during the match, joking but still professional. It’s encouraging to interact with players like them, treating others with grace and dignity. Thank you to all the ladies on these Columbus squads that served the game of soccer and their community with pride.”

Schumm was the second Bull Dog girls soccer player named in an exemplary report in two games last week. Senior Lauren Barker was cited for her honesty in telling the referee a ball had gone out of bounds prior to a North goal, which ended up nullifying the goal, in a win against Franklin.
