COLUMBUS,  Ind. — Monkeypox has been detected in a seven-county region that includes Bartholomew County, according to a new dashboard from state health officials that tracks the expanding outbreak.

As of Tuesday, there had been three probable or confirmed cases of the virus in the region, which includes Bartholomew, Brown, Jackson, Monroe, Lawrence, Orange and Washington counties.

The dashboard does not indicate in which county those cases were detected. The Indiana Department of Health does not report county-specific data when there are less than five cases in a county.

Statewide, there had been 153 probable or confirmed cases of monkey pox from June 17 to this past Tuesday.

Last month, Bartholomew County health officials said they were monitoring the monkeypox outbreak that has now infected more than 18,989 people in the United States, saying that it is “only a matter of time” before the once-rare disease is detected locally.
