East gets first win

CLARKSVILLE — Columbus East picked up its first win of the season Saturday, a 1-0 victory at Class 2A No. 14 Providence.

Jake Hofelich scored the game’s lone goal off an assist from Cam Trueblood.

The Olympians (1-3-2) outshot the Pioneers 13-2, putting seven shots on goal to one for Providence. Pete Coriden posted 1 save and moved into second place on the school’s all-time shutouts list.

Dragons stop Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County came out on the short end of a 10-1 decision against Silver Creek on Saturday.

Brady Reeves scored the goal for the Panthers (1-7) off an assist from Keiton Miller.

Knights blank Eagles

BRAZIL — Brown County couldn’t connect for a goal in a 5-0 Western Indiana Conference loss at Northview.

Marek Reeves recorded five saves, and Bradley Arndt added three saves for the Eagles (0-4, 0-3).

VOLLEYBALL

Olympians go 1-3

CLARKSVILLE — Columbus East, playing without Illinois recruit Gabby Dean because of shoulder soreness, went 1-2 Saturday in the Providence Invitational. The Olympians beat Bloomington South 25-20, 25-12 and fell to Cathedral 25-12, 25-20, Roncalli 25-19, 25-18 and Franklin 25-22, 25-21.

Maddie Cline recorded 28 kills and six aces, and Erin Williams had 56 assists and two solo and three assist blocks to lead East (6-6). Kenzie Foster notched 30 digs.

Also for the Olympians, Caroline Frost tallied 25 kills one solo and three assist blocks, and Jenna Guse pounded six kills. Williams added 17 digs and five aces, Cline and Chloe Gilley each had 16 digs, Addison Emery contributed 12 digs, Savanna Sullivan added eight digs and Foster served three aces.

Bull Dogs drop three

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North dropped three matches in Saturday’s North Central Invitational, falling to Pendleton Heights 25-12, 25-19, North Central 25-20, 25-18 and Perry Meridian 25-16, 25-23.

Karen Dutro led the Bull Dogs (4-9) with 16 kills and seven blocks. Emma Burns recorded 20 assists, Emily Stair notched 18 digs and Katelynn Mabis served two aces.

Also for North, Kennedy Horn pounded 13 kills, and Logan Branstetter added six kills. Reese Edwards tallied 18 assists, Kaitlin White had four blocks, Burns posted 13 digs and Mabis added seven digs.

Trinity takes second

MONTGOMERY — Trinity Lutheran finished runner-up in Saturday’s Barr-Reeve Invitational, beating Indianapolis Lutheran 24-26, 25-20, 15-12, Perry Central 25-19, 25-9 and Tecumseh 25-16, 19-25, 15-12 before falling to Barr-Reeve 25-15, 23-25, 15-13 in the championship match.

Bailey Tabeling recorded 56 kills and nine blocks, and Addison Darlage had 92 assists and five aces to lead the Cougars (10-5). Laura Roeder notched 50 digs, and Drew Hubbard served five aces.

Also for Trinity, Carson Bowling pounded 27 kills, Darlage had 28 digs, Tabeling added 26 digs and Roeder served three aces.

Pirates topple Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County came close in the third set Saturday, but fell to Greensburg 25-14, 25-16, 25-23.

Anna Stogsdill recorded two blocks and one ace, and Londyn Koester had 20 digs and one ace to led the Eagles (5-6). Abigail Watson pounded eight kills, and Morgan Osborn tallied 13 assists.

Also for Brown County, Stogsdill notched six kills, and Aubree Denton added four kills. Watson had one block, and Emma Lucas contributed 10 digs.

Hauser sweeps Shawe

HOPE — Hauser had a close first set on its way to a 25-22, 25-20, 25-17 win against Shawe Memorial on Friday.

Kenze Bostic recorded 12 kills, four blocks and seven digs; and Adrianna Musillami had 24 assists, seven digs and three aces to lead the Jets (8-3). Kayden Miller also served three aces.

Also for Hauser, Charlie Clark pounded four kills, Miller added three kills and Paige McDaniel had three kills and one block. Mattie Foster notched five digs and two aces, and Kyra Meister tallied four digs.

North falls to Castle

NEWBURGH — Columbus North ran into one of the state’s top teams Saturay and fell 4-0 at Class 3A No. 5 Castle.

The Bull Dogs fell to 2-3-2.

Eagles nip Knights

BRAZIL — Brown County notched its first win of the season Saturday, a 4-3 WIC victory at Northview.

Alli Majors scored two goals, and River Ford and Savannah Oden each added one goal for the Eagles (1-1-1-, 1-0-1). Xyleigh Thompson and Sophie Mathis each had an assist.

Anna Tipton posted 15 saves.

BOYS TENNIS

Arrows blank Eagles

SULLIVAN — Sullivan won three matches in straight sets and the other two by forfeit Saturday in a 5-0 WIC win against Brown County.

Jack Sichting fell to Houston Ferree 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Owen East lost to Drew Baker 6-4, 6-1 at N. 2 singles for the Eagles (2-10, 0-3). Jon Kirchoffer and Sawyer Gore fell to Spencer Harris and Carter Mischler 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Jets finish fourth

ST. LEON — Colin Kistler finished second to lead Hauser to a fourth-place finish with 76 points in the Division II boys meet in Saturday’s East Central Invitational. Hagerstown won with 37.

Kistler ran 18 minutes, 55.0 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Nolan Dailey took fifth in 19:18.3, while Ledger Gelfius was 19th (20:56.0), Collin Buck 22nd (21:08.9) and Mason Moore 28th (22:02.2)

The Jets had four girls runners, one short of the number needed to score as a team. Lucie Asher finished 16th in 26:24.0, while Madison Hollman was 17th (26:26.6), Amanda Steward 18th (26:32.8) and Reiss Kistler 32nd (33:16.2).

Lancers rally past Cougars

EDINBURGH — South Decatur jumped out to an early 7-0 lead Friday night, but Edinburgh rallied for an 18-7 victory for its first 3-0 start in more than 20 years.

The score for the Cougars (0-3) came on a 40-yard interception return by Layden Ponsler. The Lancers answered with a 34- and 47-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Murphy to Jarrett Turner, with a 2-point conversion pass from Turner to Connor Ramey giving them a 15-7 lead.

Edinburgh added to its lead on a career-long 45-yard field goal by Enrique Callejas just before halftime. South Decatur had the ball first-and-goal at the 2 in the second half, but the Lancers defense kept the Cougars from punching it in.

Turner finished with 183 yards rushing.

Bulldogs top Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County scored the first seven points and the last 14 points, but New Albany put up 27 consecutive points in the middle to post a 27-21 Hoosier Hills Conference win.

Matt Hines carried seven times for 70 yards and a touchdown, and Blaine Ison added 12 carries for 47 yards and a score for the Panthers (1-2, 0-1). Sam Burkman completed 11 of 19 passes for 130 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Stearns.

Parker Elmore caught two passes for 54 yards, and Lane Kirchner had three catches for 46 yards. Burkman, Ison and Dylan Harrison all recorded 10 tackles.

Clovers edge Eagles

CLOVERDALE — Brown County led 27-15 at halftime, but Cloverdale rallied for a 29-27 WIC win.

Noah Lewis ran for two touchdowns, and Ethan Spiece threw a scoring pass to Blake Wagler. The other touchdown for the Eagles (0-3, 0-1) came on a 75-yard interception return from Spiece, which was followed by a 2-point conversion run by Landon Scott.
