Bike to the Market Day is Saturday

Healthy Communities and the Columbus Bike Co-op Inc. are having a Bike to the Market Day as part of the community’s Move More Month celebration.

From 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, participants who bring their bike helmet to the Healthy Communities table near the bicycle parking area at the corner of Washington Street and First Street may enter into a prize drawing. Prizes include gift cards from The Bicycle Station and Columbus Cycling and Fitness.

Those who don’t have a bicycle helmet may enter a prize drawing for a new helmet. Staff and volunteers from Healthy Communities and Columbus Bike Co-op will be at the event to provide information about bicycle safety and repair and maintenance. Prizes were donated by Healthy Communities and Columbus Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO). The prize drawing will take place on Monday.

Columbus Regional Health’s latest Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) in 2021 showed that most people in our community aren’t achieving the CDC’s recommended amount of physical activity. Only 21.4% of adults and 42.8% of children meet the physical activity recommendations (adults should do 2 hours and 30 minutes a week of moderate-intensity physical activity (such as walking), or 1 hour and 15 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity (such as jogging). Children and adolescents should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity each day.) In addition, only 33.4% of children aged 5 to 17 were reported to “always” wear a helmet when riding a bike.
