Letter: Dale Nowlin would bring trust, experience to BCSC school board

From: Joy Lawler

I’m writing in support of Dale Nowlin for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation school board. School boards have faced unprecedented challenges in the past few years. There is the challenge of the pandemic, which is no one’s fault, but it has resulted in our kids being a year, if not more, behind. There has been book banning, fights over non-existent critical race theory (which has never been taught anywhere in the US below college level) and a view that white children are so fragile they can’t be taught the truth about American history.

Support for teachers is more important than ever as they face more irate parents than ever, while Indiana ranks among the lowest in teacher salaries. Dale is uniquely challenged to face all of these. A former math teacher at Columbus North, as well as at IU, he still spends many days substitute teaching. While a man of deep Christian faith himself, he doesn’t believe schools should be religious institutions and wants all children of any faith, or no faith, to succeed. He is fully supportive of allowing children to be who they are without fear of bullying because of their race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or socioeconomic status. He has dealt with all of it before, so there can’t possibly be any challenge he can’t handle.

Dale doesn’t have an agenda but wishes to put students first. He listens openly and then helps develop solutions. I am thankful that someone so qualified wants to serve on our school board, and I think we should give him that chance.
