Letter: Jan. 6 attack critical factor when voting for Congress

As I watched the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6 as it was happening, and the never-before-seen videos that were shown earlier this month, I kept forgetting that this was happening in America, a civilized democratic nation, and not in a Third World or totalitarian-ruled country.

Insurgent and insurgency are defined as uprisings against established authority. What was unusual with this attack is that the authority was President Donald Trump, who was the one responsible for the uprising. Here we have someone who was willing to create an insurgency against his own authority to ensure that his authority remains in power.

The heavily armed, Trump-incited mob attack of Jan. 6, 2021, was an attack not just on the U.S. Capitol building, but also on democracy and the rule of law. Its failure to keep Trump in power by preventing a joint session of Congress from counting the Electoral College votes to formalize the victory of President-elect Joe Biden was a devastating blow not only to Trump, but also to countries hostile to the U.S., who would love to see the end of democracy in this country, ensued by civil war. Trump and his mob almost made these countries’ wishes come true.

Let’s honor those brave souls inside the U.S. Capitol that day, who, though they were forced to flee the House chamber after some of the mob broke into the building, never gave up on their effort to complete the counting of the Electoral College votes, making Joe Biden the next president.

Liz Cheney lost her seat in Congress after she and her Republican colleague Adam Kinzinger went against their party’s and Trump’s wishes and joined the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. The greater the love one has for his or her country, the greater the sacrifice he or she is willing to make for the country. No matter what political party you belong to, let’s all show Liz Cheney how much we appreciate the political sacrifice she made in helping to expose to the public those guilty of subversion and trying to set up their own rule of law.

Let’s vote for those who truly love this country, both in words as well as in their action, and would stand by their oath to protect it from all enemies, both foreign and domestic.

We don’t need any more “rubber stamp” politicians in Congress. We need politicians who aren’t afraid to lick their own stamps (make their own decisions) no matter how sticky the situation.
