Columbus North doubles team advances to today’s semis

Anvay Atram

INDIANAPOLIS — The Columbus North duo of Anvay Atram and Amrit Kar have punched their tickets to the boys tennis state doubles semifinal with a 6-4, 6-1 win over South Bend St. Joseph’s Jake Westberry and Luke Blumentritt Friday afternoon at Park Tudor High School.

Atram and Kar, who are still unbeaten this season at 22-0, will face Park Tudor’s Oliver Seifert and Michael Fryburg, who won against Eli Flick and Noah Schue of Jasper in a quarterfinal match, today at 10 a.m. with the state final match being at 2 p.m. in the afternoon.

Atram and Kar jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set, but then dropped the next two game to make it 5-4. They broke serve in the next game to claim the opening set. In the second set, they got off to a quick start to lead 5-0. They would drop the next game until they closed it out in the following game. The duo never trailed in the match.

“We served the ball really well overall today,” North coach Kendal Hammel said. “The guys played well. They hit those ground strokes all day long. We volleyed well and our serve was excellent. We got a lot of points off our serves. We’ll need to that (today) against Park Tudor. They’re a good team.”

Hammel said it’s going to be another tough matchup against Seifert and Fryburg.

“They’re very aggressive. They’re all over the net,” Hammel said. “Our guys are going to have to hit some good ground strokes. We’re going to try to get ourselves up at the net, as well, and not let them dictate the points.”
