Media literacy week to have presentations

IUPUC will observe Media Literacy Week in conjunction with IU Bloomington, IUPUI, and IU East from Tuesday through Friday 2022 with a variety of programs hosted in person at various campuses, and conducted online via Zoom.

Media Literacy Week is sponsored nationally by the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) with a mission to highlight the power of media literacy education and its essential role in education today.

Tuesday

— The Metaverse Meets Media Literacy, 10:30 to 11:45 a.m.

This panel discusses the necessity of media literacy around emerging metaverse technologies and encourages all users work to create and shape inclusive, diverse, and accessible virtual spaces.

— What do you know: Detecting Misinformation in the Digital Age, noon to 1:15 p.m.

Detecting misinformation in a digital age: Can it be done? With the help of experts including speakers from IU Health, the U.S. Marine Corps, and IUPUI’s Department of Communication Studies, we will explore the answers to the questions surrounding misinformation in our digital age.

— Parasocial Relations and Misinformation, 1:30 to 2:45 p.m.

Parasocial Relations? You probably have some, even though you may be unfamiliar with the term. Come to this interactive workshop to find out what they are, to learn about their connection to online misinformation, and to pick up some strategies for maintaining healthy parasocial relations.

— Social Media Misinformation: Health, Wellness, and Questioning Your Sources, noon to 1 p.m.

Join Carol Kennedy-Armbruster, Rachel Ryder, and Margaret Lion from IU School of Public Health-Bloomington for a spirited discussion about health, wellness, and media. Come to question your sources and experiences with media and learn how to understand the information the media gives.

  • Black Mirror: Information Dystopias and their Consequences

10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

— This panel will address some of the myriad philosophical, political and social consequences of our current era’s attempts to grapple with the consequences of 21st Century technologies, as brought to light by Netflix’s dystopian Twilight Zone, “Black Mirror.”

Media Literacy and Elections, 2 to 3:15 p.m.

— This panel discussion will focus on elections and information, with attention given to voting integrity, how COVID affected voting patterns and how the media portrays international conflict. The panel will also cover strategies for identifying misinformation and critical thinking with regard to assessing information sources.

Media: Believe it or Not, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

— This presentation addresses the challenge of information quality in today’s media. The goal of this presentation is to enable participants to make informed choices about how to evaluate and use information, from fact checking to evaluating bias. This session is part of IUPUC’s “Columbus Conversations” forums and is supported by an Innovate Indiana grant from the IU Council on Regional Engagement and Economic Development.
