Cummins Inc. has announced that it is one of two companies selected to develop and produce generator sets for the Department of Defense and Large Tactical Power System.

The Columbus-based company said Tuesday that it will “develop, manufacture, test and produce” generators “to meet the electrical power needs of the Department of Defense and its Large Tactical Power System, or LTPS programs.

Cummins characterized the award in a press release as a “major defense contract” but did not disclose the amount of the award.

LTPS is a modernization program that seeks to provide more mobile, reliable and logistically supportable tactical electric power sources for the Department of Defense’s 21st century digitized forces, Cummins said. The LTPS consists of dual 500-kilowatt generators in a power plant configuration.

Upon award of Phase I, two contractors will deliver four power plant configurations for testing, Cummins said.

“We are excited and honored to be one of two contractors selected by the DoD for their LTPS programs,” Doreen Swanson, Cummins director of government and military business for Cummins Power Generation. “It is in direct reflection of our team’s persistence in innovation: to create the most reliable and logistically supportable power sources for the future of digitized forces.”

Cummins also has been developing and producing the 5-kilowatt and 60-kilowatt family of Advanced Medium Mobile Power Sources for the Department of Defense, as well as the 800-kilowatt Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources, since 2013, the company said.
