Jackson retains seat as Columbus Township trustee

After winning a definite victory Tuesday, Republican Ben Jackson will mark his 10th year as Columbus Township Trustee next year.

Jackson came out on top against a young, but well-qualified Democratic opponent. Andrew Sekeres III recently earned his master’s degree in social work and is employed by the Indiana Family and Social Security Administration. He also volunteers with the Bartholomew County Food and Security Coalition.

After being appointed to fill out the term of Fred Barkes in June 2013, Jackson retained the position of Columbus Township Trustee following the 2014 and 2018 elections. Jackson received a mixed reception when he helped open the Brighter Days emergency shelter in 2016 and the Recovery Engagement Center two years later.

While both projects was lauded by many nonprofits, neighbors complained to police that the emergency shelter was attracting an undesirable element near businesses and homes. However, police said there was no noticable increase in crime after Brighter Days opened.

Columbus Township is the largest township in Bartholomew County. The trustee is a full-time employee, earning $62,000 annually.
