Heating assistance applications available

The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) has applications open for the federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This state statute protects those who have applied from disconnection from Dec. 1 through Mar. 15.

Those interested can learn more and apply on the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority’s website at www.in.gov/ihcda/homeowners-and-renters/low-income-home-energy-assistance-program-liheap. Those without internet access may call 1-800-872-0371.

Many utilities have their own assistance programs. Those seeking financial assistance should call the state’s 24 hour help line at 2-1-1.

All utility customers are encouraged to pay heating bills each month, even if they can only make partial payments. Many utilities offer budget billing, which provides a consistent monthly payment based on the customer’s expected usage. Budget billing can provide month to month consistency throughout the winter.
