Honoring Jennings County’s veterans

Volunteers last weekend visited three cemeteries in Jennings County to place wreaths on the graves of veterans and their families.

In what in recent years has become an annual tradition organized by Larry French, a retired Seymour letter carrier and U.S. Army veteran, volunteers this year placed more wreaths than ever — about 150 — at cemeteries at St. Joseph’s, St. Ann’s and St. Mary’s Catholic churches last Saturday and Sunday.

Donations from the community, the churches, Knights of Columbus in North Vernon and others made the event possible, French said. He added that in addition to veterans, the community also is honoring with wreaths spouses of veterans and those whose careers in essential occupations, such as railroad engineers and farmers, resulted in their exemption from military service.

“We also wanted to honor those who served but never left home,” French said.
