BCSC names two to new leadership roles

David Miller

Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. has announced two upcoming leadership changes.

The school board voted Monday to appoint Director of Title Services Charles Edwards as BCSC’s new director of secondary education.

The board also approved Columbus East Assistant Athletics Director and Dean of Students David Miller as the school’s head athletics director.

According to school officials, Edwards and Miller will remain in their current positions until June 30, 2023. Edwards will replace BCSC Director of Secondary Education Bill Jensen, who is set to retire in June. East’s current athletics director, Pete Huse, is also set to retire at the end of the school year, said BCSC officials.

Edwards and Miller each expressed excitement about their new roles and gratitude for the mentorship they’ve received within the district.

“I’ve worked in a leadership capacity in BCSC for a very long time,” said Edwards. “Almost 20 years. And as Dr. Roberts said, it’s because I chose to be here, and it’s because I wanted to be a part of the work that BCSC was doing. I wanted to be a part of it then, and I continue to want to be a part of it now. It is truly progressive.”

Edwards was appointed to his current position in the spring of 2021. His previous experience in education includes being a middle school language arts teacher, a high school language arts teacher, dean of students at Northside Middle School, dean of students at East and assistant principal at East. Edwards has also co-chaired BCSC’s Diversity Council since its inception, said Superintendent Jim Roberts.

Miller has filled a number of roles at East since 2006, including strength and conditioning coach, assistant football coach, offensive line coach, assistant boys track coach and head boys track coach.

Additionally, he was named to the Indiana High School Football Hall of Fame Class of 2021 as a player. Prior to joining BCSC, Miller played football at Ball State and spent three seasons in the NFL, mostly on the practice squads of the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and New York Giants.

Miller said that he is excited to step into the role of athletic director and “serve the coaches and student athletes at Columbus East High School for many years to come.”
