City approves subdivision improvement agreement for airport project

The city of Columbus has given its approval for Columbus Municipal Airport to begin work on preparing some of its property for future leasing and development.

The Columbus Board of Works has approved a subdivision improvement agreement for Section 1 of the airplex commerce center.

According to a memo from senior planner Ashley Beckort, the project is located north of Poshard Drive between Middle Road and Arnold Street. The approved preliminary plat for the airplex commerce center includes 37 industrial lots on about 43 acres of land. Section 1 includes 15 lots and the construction of new streets.

“The developer is seeking approval to begin construction of the streets, sidewalks, storm sewers, and other public improvements,” wrote Beckort. “They are not, at this time, also seeking approval for the final subdivision plat for this section. That plat approval, which is necessary prior to building construction on the lots, will be requested in the future.”

At that time, all public improvements will be fully complete, or substantially complete with a financial guarantee for outstanding construction.

Columbus City Council recently authorized the Columbus Redevelopment Commission to grant $1.15 million in tax increment funds to the airport for the project.

The funds will be used to extend Grissom Street near the Columbus Police Department firing range east to a new road that will be called Suverkrup Drive, which will run south and intersect with Poshard Drive, Airport Director Brian Payne said at a previous city meeting.

The grant will also be used to add water and sewer utilities for parcels and add new infrastructure nearby, such as a crosswalk across from Poshard Drive connecting Suverkrup Drive to Deerbrook Drive and a side path on the Columbus People Trail down Poshard Drive to Middle Road.
