Bluegrass gospel singer and Opry veteran to present Jan. 8 concert

The accolades flow like a melody these days in the life of bluegrass and southern gospel singer Daryl Mosley.

Countless appearances at the legendary Grand Ole Opry. Regular shows at other prestigious Music City venues such as the Bluebird Cafe and Ryman Auditorium.

His tunes featured on such TV shows as “American Idol” and “The View.”

But Mosley, 58, speaks of a more basic form of success.

“I am so thankful that God has allowed me to make this my life’s journey,” Mosley said. “Using my songs and my story to share his story and message is my life’s greatest joy.”

The artist will do precisely that during a free concert — with a love offering — at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 8 at Wilson Chapel Christian Union, 9435 N. State Road 7 in Elizabethtown. A soup-and-sandwich lunch will follow.

The singer/songwriter who has been on the road for more than 30 years averages some 150 dates annually. Mosley has written three Song of the Year award winners in the realm of the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America. Eight of his songs have made it to No. 1, and he has twice been named Songwriter of the Year.

His songs have been recorded by dozens of artists ranging from bluegrass legend Bobby Osborne to country star Lynn Anderson. One of his best-known songs, “(Ask the Blind Man) He Saw It All,” was named one of the top Southern gospel songs of all time.

Add to his accomplishments this triple-crown element: He has written No. 1 songs in three different genres: bluegrass, Christian country, and southern gospel. Music legends from Tom T. Hall and Ronnie Milsap to Bill Gaither and Dave Loggins have praised both Mosley’s singing prowess and his gifts as a songwriter.

“I just write and sing songs about real life and real people,” he said. “Songs about faith and home and community are the foundation of my music because those are the things that are most precious to me.”

And he still calls his hometown of tiny Waverly, Tennessee home — a place he has labeled as “Mayberry-esque” — just outside of Nashville. His down-home background includes learning to play guitar on his grandmother’s 1956 Gibson model, which he still has.
