The Columbus Flames Squirt AA won the championship in the Big Chill Hockey Tournament. They beat Fort Wayne Force 7-5 and Plymouth Flyers 5-2, fell to Strongsville Mustangs AA 1-0 and beat the Fort Wayne Force in the championship 6-2. Maddox Coy led the team with 12 goals, while Dalton Larsh netted three goals, Thomas Degner scored two goals, Avery Orgass recorded one goal and one assist, Daniel Wallace notched three assists, Ollie Jamerson had two assists and Carson Sims and Lucas Oswald each added one assist. Cayden Long was in net, saving 80 of 90 shots for a save percentage of 88.8%.

Columbus Flames Bantam B played in the Chicago Midwinter Classic Tournament. They tied the Elmhurst Chiefs 4-4, beat the Eastside Bulldogs 4-3 and Pleasant Prairie Vipers 3-2 before falling to the Elmhurst Chiefs 1-0 in the championship game. Ryan McGhehey netted three goals and one assist; Zane Lynch recorded one goal and five assists; Bryson Moore notched two goals and one assist; Cooper Ross and Carter Kareus each had one goal and one assist; Linda Wang, Lilli Donica and Noah Doig all scored one goal and Gabe Marsh and John Tuttle each added one assist. Gabe Marsh was in net all weekend.

Columbus Flames Bantam A played in the Big Chill Tournament. They lost to the Kalamazoo K-Wings 2-0 and the Wilmet Jr. Traviens 7-2. Ashton Nguyen scored both goals. Lane Barringer was in net.

Peewee B competed in the Scruffy City shootout. They beat California Wave 3-2 and Pineville Falcons 9-1, tied the Knoxville Junior Ice Bears 0-0 and fell to the Knoxville Junior Ice Bears 5-1 in the championship. Henry Jamerson netted four goals and one assist; Colby Payne scored three goals; Nolan Sparkman recorded two goals and two assists; Graham Barnes and Hudson Maynard each notched one goal and one assist; Jonah Broderick and Eli Dykstra each scored one goal; Luke Dunn had two assists and Hallie Mudd, Luis Taqueshi and Luke Getchell all added one assist. Knox Coen was in net.

Columbus Icemen Varsity beat Westfield 5-3 and Bloomington 4-1. Carter Greene netted three goals; Alex Clark scored two goals; Will Kushner recorded one goal and two assists; Nate Balasia and John Ferguson each notched one goal and one assist; Drew Weed scored one goal; Dane Weinzapfel had two assists and Barrett Mudd, John Merritt, Eddie Aranda and Cole Finney all added one assist, Ben Blanz and Jake McMullen were in net.

Columbus Icemen Prep beat Louisville 6-4. Jayden Pagan netted three goals, Eddie Aranda scored two goals, Cole Vreeland notched one goal and two assists, Griffen Mudd had two assists and Noah Dornfield and Louie Vandergriff each added one assist. Sydney Morrow was in net.

BASKETBALL

Central girls win Salem tournament

The Central Middle School eighth-grade girls won the Salem Tournament last weekend.

Kaylie Harmon led Central with 11 points in a 44-21 win over Silver Creek. Riley Sims scored eight, and Avery Baker and Ava Wilson each added seven.

Wilson scored 13 points in a 45-33 win against Scottsburg. Sims added 10.

Harmon led the Chargers with 16 points in a 61-27 win against South Central. Wilson added 13.

Jennings girls post victories

The Jennings County seventh-grade girls beat St. Mary’s (Greensburg) 26-13 on Tuesday. Kenna Sentz led the Panthers with nine points.

The seventh-grade girls topped Southwestern 44-19 on Thursday. Aniston Kent scored 15 points, and Mookky Ratcliff added 10.

The Jennings eighth-grade JV team beat St. Mary’s 20-18 on a last-second shot by Alana Watts. Isla Stevens led the Panthers with six points.

The Jennings seventh-grade boys edged Seymour 33-30 on Thursday. Cash Summers scored 14 points, and Nate Dixon added nine for the Panthers (11-3).

SWIMMING

Club Olympia swims at Mudsock Classic

Nearly 50 Club Olympia swimmers competed in their first club meet of 2023, the Mudsock Classic hosted by the Fishers Area Swim Team with nearly 600 swimmers representing 18 teams from Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Illinois. Club Olympia finished fourth overall behind the much larger host and local Fishers and Noblesville teams, as well as Cincinnati’s top rated Mason Manta Rays.

Club Olympia’s Sheryan Kulkarni won the 9-10-year-old boys High Point trophy in the Mudsock Classic Swim Meet at Fishers.

Shreyan Kulkarni claimed the 9-10 boys high point trophy and led Club Olympia with top-two finishes in all 11 of his individual events, including wins in the 1,650 yard (mile) freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle and second-place finishes in the 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley.

The 8-and-under girls were led by Myra Jaryal placing second in the 50 breaststroke, third in the 25 breaststroke, fourth in the 50 butterfly and 100 IM, fifth in the 50 freestyle and five additional top 10-finishes. Bella Zhang, Aahana Ingole, and Neeti Gujarathi combined for 25 top-20, including three top-10 finishes.

The 8U boys were led by Sarthak Dishmukh, who claimed third in the 50 breaststroke and fifth in the 25 breaststroke, 25 backstroke, 25 butterfly and 100 IM, with four other top-10 finishes. Chad Pendleton, competing on only one day, finished second in the 25 freestyle, 25 breaststroke and 25 butterfly, third in the 50 backstroke and eighth in the 200 freestyle. Rayaan Malviya and Max Tempest combined for 16 top-20 finishes.

Top competitors in the 9-10 division along with Kulkarni, included Lily Pendleton placing fourth in the girls 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 butterfly, with four other top-10 finishes, along with Aahan Gupta, Adir Joshi and Shourya Malviya, who combined for 19 top-20, including four top-10 finishes in the boys division.

Joshua Pendleton swam a limited schedule in the 11-12 division for the weekend, yet still won the 50 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 200 IM, with a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle. Camila and Rebeca Mejia Murguia combined for seven top-20, five top-10 and one top-five finish in the 11-12 girls division.

In the 1,650-yard (mile) freestyle event, Rebeca Mejia Murguia placed second in the 11-12 girls division, and Nandini Kondhare and Sanaa Kulkarni took ninth and 10th in the 13-14 girls division.

Joining Kulkarni in the boys 1,650, yet competing in the open division, were Ty Mayer who placed sixth, Cavan Stilson 13th, Todd Hundley 14th, Lane Mellancamp 15th, Luke Miller 16th, Keaton Stephenson 18th and Ethan Hall 20th. Because it was a timed final event, all seven scored points.

Club Olympia relay teams combined for 12 top-10 finishes with a top placing of second in the 200 medley relay by the 10U boys team of Gupta, Malviya, Joshi and Kulkarni. Those four also took fourth in the 200 medley relay. The 8U girls team took third in both the 100 medley and 100 freestyle relays.

Several 15-and-over Club Olympia swimmers competed in Sunday morning prelim events and qualified to compete for the Sunday evening finals events, but scratched from those finals due to their upcoming high school team schedules this week.

Columbus East senior Brady Beyer, swimming unattached during the 60-day transfer period, won the 200 breaststroke and finished second in the Open 1,650 freestyle and and third in the 200 backstroke.

Donner hosts January Winter Invitational

Donner Swim Club hosted it’s January Winter Invitational last weekend against more than 300 athletes from 10 clubs.

Charlie Reed was a high point winner from Donner.

In the 10U division, Ella Bringman scored 119 points, with second-place finishes in the 100 backstroke, 50 butterfly and 200 IM and top-eight in all the other events she participated. Luiza Salomao placed second in 100 IM and earned a total of 114 points in all her events. Cooper Bringman scored 106 points with his personal best a second in the 50 butterfly and placed in the top eight at all of his events. Ritvik Prithiviraj scored 100 points and won the 100 butterfly.

Ellie Fitzsimmons scored 87 points and won the 50 freestyle and 100 IM. Courtland Reed scored 78 points. Lincoln Crawford scored 41 points, with a second in the 50 backstroke. Maggie Novreske scored 53 points. Cade Paulsen scored 49 points, with a fourth in the 25 Freestyle. Nathan Perfetto scored 40 points, with a third in the 100 butterfly. Shinjan Bera scored 38 points with a third in the 25 backstroke. Shoki Sato scored 25 points, and Shabarirajan Thangaraj added 24 points.

Bryant Babb scored 23 points with a fifth in the 25 freestyle. Gavin Ley scored 22 points and placed third in the 25 breaststroke. Jasper Blowfield scored 22 points and was fifth in the 100 IM. Bryce Seger scored 15 points, placing fourth in the 25 backstroke. Charlie Getz and Anna Reed each scored 15 points. Maggie Novreske scored 13 points and placed top-eight in three events. Sydney Paulsen scored 13 points. Natalie Parsons scored 12. Parker Boyer scored 10 points.

Charlie Reed, Jasper Elkins, Linley Babb, Kennedy Greer-Bos, Jonathan Lee, Kavya Mahulkar Mary Beth Pigman, Michael Pigman, Abhyud Ponnathpur, David Ning and Emma Simms were the other swimmers who netted points for Donner.

In the 11-12 division, Caroline Crawford scored 91 points with top eight finishes in five events. Garett Perfetto scored 75 points and placed in the top eight in five events. Sanchita Ponnathpur scored 46 points and won the 200 breaststroke. Rajvi Sapkal scored 44 points with a second in the 200 breaststroke. Other Donner point scorers in the 11-12 age group were Liam Babb, Abhay Bhadauria, Deetya Chintam, Aarav Sriram, Anand Leela and Nithya Neela.

In the 13-and-over division, Mridula Muthukumaran scored 117 points and won the 100 backstroke, 100 Butterfly and placed top-five in all her events. Abby Proffitt scored 86.5 points, placing second in the 500 freestyle. Eli Varchenko scored 11 points, and Hudson Clock added three points.

BROOMBALL

Monsters, Hansons finish in deadlock

The top two teams in the Columbus Broomball League, Monsters of Rock and Hansons, played to a 5-5 tie.

Ben Eckhart scored two goals, and Rob Jones, Zach Henderson and Tyler Rash all added one for Monsters (7-1-1). Max Warr and Rahul Bhardwaj each netted two goals, and John Lane had one for Hansons (6-2-1).

CCA edged Our Name Is Earl 2-1. Machael Baily and Scott Herron scored for CCA (6-3). Darren Eckerly had the goal for Earl (5-4).

Jennings County BC picked up its first win of the season, a 7-2 triumph against Tylota Tsunamis. Darien Castetter netted four goals, and Skyler Mathews, Nick Hill and Stephanie Castetter all added one for Jennings (1-8). Dalton McNealy and Collin Graeber scored for Tsunamis (1-8).

WRESTLING

Panthers take third in Snowball Jamboree

Jennings County Middle School went 3-2 to finish third in last weekend’s Snowball Jamboree. The Panthers beat Lawrenceburg 74-24, Triton Central 66-41 and Connersville 54-42 and fell to East Central 49-45 and Delta 36-36 (Delta won on criteria).

Luke Kirchner and Carter Mikels each went 5-0, while Jace Pelfrey went 3-0, and Ryan Clark and Ethan Cash each went 3-0 for Jennings. Conner Bower, Brady Franks, Khyson Sutton, Gomie Gomez, Darrel Hicks and Rhyder Townsend all had just one loss on the day.
