Lewis T. Tichy

COLUMBUS

Lewis Thain Tichy, 69, of Columbus, Indiana, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2023, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus, Indiana, following complications of influenza.

Lewis was born October 4, 1953, in Seymour, Indiana, the son of Raymond David and Marjorie May Tichy of Hayden, Indiana, who both preceded him in death.

Lewis is survived by his siblings, Carol Dean of Fort Myers, Florida; David Tichy of Independence, Missouri; Wilma Tichy of Berkley, California; and Laura Tichy, also of Fort Myers, Florida; as well as several nieces and nephews. In keeping with the family’s request, cremation will take place and there is no service planned at this time.

Lewis graduated Arlington High School in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1971. He graduated Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, in the late 1970s with a degree in civil engineering. He served in the Indiana Air National Guard for seven years during the 1970s as a documenting photographer, attached to the Air Guard’s Terre Haute base. He also worked during the 1970s in the photography department at the K-Mart on Pendleton Pike in Indianapolis.

Noted by friends as a “gentle soul,” he was known as a fan of John Denver’s music, which fit with his enjoyment of walks in nature. Lewis had intertwining loves of astronomy and science fiction. In his youth, he attended amateur astronomy events at observatories in the Indianapolis area. His friends recall that he frequently observed the stars through his telescope and that he would take them on night walks where he pointed out stars and constellations to them in the sky. He was a “Trekkie” and watched Star Trek from his teen years into old age. He also read novels by serious science fiction writers such as Isaac Asimov. In his later years, his friends state that he loved playing bingo at Just Friends Adult Day Services – and even more loved to win at it.
