Rep. Ryan Lauer: A home for higher education

At a time when communities are competing for talent, development and investments, Columbus has an ace in the hole. As the state’s first shared-used facility housing top-notch colleges and universities, the Columbus Learning Center is a vital component of Bartholomew County and a model for collaboration.

This legislative session, I authored legislation to ensure the Center continues to call our community home. House Bill 1092 would extend the Center’s sublease with the state, which is set to expire in 2025, to at least 2035. If passed, my bill would also dedicate more than $5 million from the state to pay off the remaining debt of the building.

With the Columbus Learning Center right in our backyard, students and workers have readily available and accessible work-based learning opportunities to propel their futures. At the center, Hoosiers can attend courses from Indiana University, Purdue University Columbus, Ivy Tech and Purdue Polytechnic Institute. More than 4,000 students are currently enrolled in classes on campus, and working toward earning certificates, degrees and training in advanced manufacturing and other technology-related careers.

The Center is also critical to our local economy and job providers. In fact, after completing their education, more than 80% of graduates remain in the area and work for local employers. Our community is blessed to have such an innovative and successful space for lifelong learning.

I’m dedicated to keeping the momentum rolling, and providing a permanent home for higher education opportunities in our community.
