Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies arrested a wanted Flat Rock suspect after leading them on a chase which ended with the suspect driving into a pond in the Sandy Hook neighborhood.

Bartholomew County Sheriff Detective Dane Duke said at about 3:15 p.m. Friday, Deputy Daniel Lawson conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of State Road 46 and East State Street.

The vehicle was known to law enforcement as being driven by a Benjamin Munn, 48 of Flat Rock. Munn had an active warrant for failure to appear on the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon issued by Shelby County, Duke said.

Munn’s serious violent felon status stems from a voluntary manslaughter conviction in Brown County from a 2012 arrest.

Munn initially stopped the vehicle, however after being order to exit the vehicle he sped away from the scene, Duke said. Law enforcement pursued Munn until he exited the roadway near the intersection of Taylor Road and Waycross Drive.

Munn’s vehicle traveled down a slight hill in the lawn of a residence and then crashed into the pond in the Sandy Hook neighborhood, Duke said.

Munn exited the vehicle and was taken into custody as he came to shore, Duke said. Munn was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for routine medical clearance then transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he remains in custody.

Munn was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony, criminal mischief, a Level 6 felony, reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor and the Shelby County warrant.

The Bartholomew County Water Rescue Dive Team along with conservation officers from the Department of Natural Resources were called to the scene to recover the vehicle. The vehicle was removed from the pond after a several hour-long recovery operation.
