ST. LEON — Columbus East set qualified for the Boys Swimming State Finals in four events after setting school records in all four in Saturday’s East Central Sectional.
The Olympians finished fourth overall as a team with 299.5 points, while Colubmus North was fifth with 263.5. Bloomington North won with 415 to 368 for Bloomington South and 313 for East Central.
East senior Brady Beyer won the 500-yard freestyle (4 minutes, 35.67 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (56.94).
“I was really happy with my times,” Beyer said. “I wasn’t fully rested for that meet. I wanted to go good times to get good seeds for state. I was really happy. My focus has been on state, so thisis really good.”
The Olympians also are in position to receive call-backs to state in a pair of relays. Junior Judah Nickoll, Beyer, sophomore Micha Machavariani and junior Cavan Stilson finished third in the 200 medley relay (1:37.44). The same quartet took fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:16.92).
Nickoll also finished second in the 100 backstroke (55.03) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:47.91), and Machavariani took second in the 200 individual medley (1:58.60) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (53.69). Gavin Day was second in the diving competition (369.95) to advance to Tuesday’s Jasper Diving Regional.
“It was a great day,” East coach Doug Trueblood said. “The boys swam great on Thursday to get themselves in position to compete and score today, and we followed it up with some good swims today. It was just a good all-around effort from all of the boys.”
Meanwhile, North’s Pratt Badve finished third in the 100 backstroke (55.11). The Bull Frogs were third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.24), fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:40.74) and fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:24.20).
