IUPUC softball notches second win of season

Rachel Cowan

The IUPUC softball team claimed its second victory of the season Sunday afternoon, a 4-3 victory at Viterbo.

Columbus North graduate Rachel Cowan went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Morgan Steineker went 2 for 4 to lead the offense. Sydney Owens threw a seven-hitter in picking up the win.

The Crimson Pride (2-7) then fell 5-3 at Indiana Tech. Jennings County graduate Katie Mahoney went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Gracie Holok went 2 for 3 with a double. Cowan threw a six-hitter in taking the loss.

Meanwhile, the IUPUC baseball team dropped all four of its games against Cleary (Michigan) this weekend at Jennings County. Cleary swept the Crimson Pride 12-6 and 3-0 on Saturday and 9-0 and 8-4 in extra innings on Sunday.

Ben Fricke went 2 for 3 with a home run, Wyatt Sutton went 2 for 4 and John Codner and Max Wyninger homered in Saturday’s opener. Gavin Haltom, the first of five IUPUC pitchers, took the loss.

The Crimson Pride were held to three hits in Saturday’s second game. Riley Mertl and Jared Ross combined on a four-hitter.

IUPUC also managed just three hits in Sunday’s opener. Daniel Bradley, the first of five pitchers, took the loss. Columbus Christian graduate Parker Walden made his college debut.

Wyatt Sutton and Peyton Blinn each went 2 for 4, and Hauser graduate Trey Johnson smacked a double in Sunday’s second game. Blake Nigg took the loss.

The Crimson Pride (1-15) were hoping to play on its new home field at Ceraland this coming weekend, but that field is not yet ready for play, so its scheduled doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday against Concordia (Michigan) will be at Jennings County. There is a chance those games will get pushed to Saturday and Sunday because of expected rain on Friday.
