SEYMOUR FORMERLY OF COLUMBUS

Mary Lou Wessel, 89, of Seymour, formerly of Columbus, passed from this life at 5:23 a.m. Thursday, March 9, 2023, at the Lutheran Community Home in Seymour.

Mrs. Wessel was born in Brownstown, February 6, 1934, the loving daughter of Theodore S. and Lucille England Groce. On June 1, 1952, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wegan, Mary Lou married Lee D. Wessel; he survives.

Mrs. Wessel was employed at Irwin Union Bank, Thompson &Jones Attorneys at Law and attorney Donald Jurgemeyer. She then was a travel consultant at the former M&M Travel retiring in 1996.

Mrs. Wessel was a faithful member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Columbus where she was a Bible teacher and held many offices and positions. She was a member of the Christian Service Guild. She was a past member of Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority, Home Ec Club and the Columbus Star Quilters. Mrs. Wessel traveled to many countries, enjoyed making banners, and was an avid quilter. She excelled in watercolor painting and she liked to write poetry. She deeply loved her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Mrs. Wessel is survived by her husband of 70 years, Lee; children, David (Carol) Wessel of Columbus, Teresa (Danny) Sturdivant of Columbus, Kathy Durham of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, and Paul (Cathy) Wessel of Franklin; grandchildren, Amy Blair, Erica (Mike) Pessia, Anthony Wessel and his fianc?e, Olivia Ludwig, Danielle Durham, Brittany Durham, Chelsea (Scott) Klein, and Eric (Abby) Wessel; great-grandchildren, Samantha Blair, Amanda Lopez, Dylan, Drew, and Drake Pessia, Garrett and Cooper Klein, and Kinsley Wessel Ludwig; brother, Tom (Mary) Groce of Seymour; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Mrs. Wessel was preceded in death by her parents.

The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; the Reverend Mark Teike will officiate.

Family and friends may gather for visitation from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
