A spring celebration: ABC Stewart students celebrate India’s welcome to the season

Mike Wolanin | The Republic Sharvil Shirwadkar tosses Holi gulal in the air as ABC Stewart students celebrate Holi at ABC Stewart School in Columbus, Ind., Wednesday, March 8, 2023.

ABC Stewart Montessori school celebrated Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colors, in a very colorful way.

The school serves a diverse community with students from all over the world, said teacher Whitney King, one of the organizers for the event.

Since many of the ABC Stewart families are from India, where Holi is celebrated with the coming of spring, it was incorporated into a festival celebration at the school.

In India, during the festival, people dance in the streets and throw colored powder (gulal) in the air as part of the festivities.

Students at ABC Stewart have been reading books about Holi, learning about and eating traditional Indian food, and then participated in “our own gulal throwing party,” King said.

Parents volunteered to bring in Indian food and purchas the gulal, she said.

“Our parents are active participants in our community and they love sharing their culture with our students,” she said.
