Pliny Scott Poffenberger

Pliny Scott Poffenberger, Sr., 92, of Columbus, IN passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 26, 2023 at Franciscan Health Indianapolis. Scott was born March 17, 1931 to Pliny H. and Annetta B. Strahl Poffenberger, the fourth of five children. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1949, and from Franklin College with a degree in history. Scott married L. Joann Daily November 23, 1952, to whom he was married for 67 years. After serving in the Korean War, Scott went back to school on the G.I. Bill, earning a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University.

A successful entrepreneur, Scott created several businesses that reflected his varied interests: Tri-City Building Components (in North Carolina); Wright Hill Berry Farm (Bartholomew County); and Colwood Supply (Edinburgh). He was also an accomplished gardener, a master furniture builder, and an avid bird watcher who loved being out in nature. Anyone who was acquainted with Scott knew he was a dedicated worker and a man of his convictions.

Survivors include children, Elizabeth A. Poffenberger of Symsonia, KY, P. Scott Poffenberger, Jr. of Flat Rock, and Jennifer M. (John) Heichelbech of Columbus; grandsons, Samuel, Elias, and Julian Heichelbech; sisters, Elizabeth Huffman and Evalina Smith. Scott was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joann; siblings, Dick Wayman and Betty Sweeney.

Calling hours for Scott will be held Thursday, March 30, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Barkes, Weaver and Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. A graveside service with inurnment will be held Friday, March 31, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Hope Moravian Cemetery with Pastor Andy Kilps officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hope Moravian Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, 202 Main Street, Hope, IN 47246.
