Fire damages California Street home

Mike Wolanin | The Republic Columbus firefighters put water on a house fire at 1010 California Street in Columbus, Ind., Friday, April 14, 2023.

A fire destroyed a vacant home at 1010 California St. in Columbus at about 9 a.m. Friday.

A passerby noticed the smoke and knocked on the door before calling 911 to notify the Columbus Fire Department, said Columbus Fire Chief Andy Lay.

Upon arrival, firefighters did a quick preliminary search of the one-story home, which has an attic and basement, and found no one inside, although they noticed a large amount of stored items. Firefighters were at the scene for about two hours, Lay said.

Local investigators and the State Fire Marshal’s office have been called in, Lay said, and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Firefighters listed the home valued at $100,000 as a total loss with an additional $20,000 loss to the contents.

No injuries were reported.
