COLUMBUS, INDIANA
Columbus resident Margaret Maxine Wheeler passed peacefully away on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at the Four Seasons Healthcare Center. She was 94, and was preceded in death by her husband Stanley Robert Wheeler (age 76) in 2003. They enjoyed 53 anniversaries together, and were members of the First Christian Church where they were active in their 3M Sunday school class.
Maxine is survived by her five children: Penny Gillie (Scott) of Bloomington, Indiana; David (Soheila) of Storrs, Connecticut; Jeffrey (Jody) of Peachtree Corners, Georgia; Timothy (Gina) of Fishers, Indiana.; and Sarah Price (Chris) of Georgetown, Kentucky; plus nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Born September 27, 1928, Maxine was the only child of Ralph David and Sarah Nettie Church of Shelbyville, Indiana. She was a graduate of Franklin College where she majored in journalism, and was a life-long member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.
Maxine loved horses, dogs, camping, fishing, reading, and writing. She was active in Cub and Girl Scouts as a Den Mother and Troop Leader, and in the Indiana Federation of Poetry Clubs as a contributing poet. Further, she was a member of the Saddle Club, Research Club (where she was a past President), and Senior Scribes.
A funeral service for Maxine will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at noon at the Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home, 1029 Washington Street in Columbus. Friends may gather for visitation at the funeral home that day from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Private burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
