Carter has initial hearing on murder charge

Anthony Wayne Carter

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A man accused of killing his girlfriend earlier this month had his first hearing Tuesday in Bartholomew Superior Court 1.

Anthony W. Carter, 49, of 3018 E. Raymond St., Indianapolis, is charged with murder for the April 16 killing of Ashley E. Neville. The body of the 40-year-old victim was found inside her residence within the 500 block of East County Road 650S. If convicted, Carter could receive between 45 to 65 years in prison.

During the initial hearing, Judge James Worton scheduled a change of plea hearing for July 30 at 9:45 a.m., a pre-trial conference on Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. and a tentative trial date of Aug. 29 at 8:30 a.m. After Carter said he could not afford to hire his own lawyer, Worton appointed Greg Long as Carter’s public defender.
