Driver arrested on drug-related charges after traffic stop

Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies arrested a woman who was stopped on multiple traffic violations early Friday morning after a tip about a possible drunk driver.

Briana McFarland, 32 of 4675 Northeastern Blvd., Columbus, was the driver, and was stopped by Deputy Robert Cooper at about 12:22 a.m. Friday, said Detective Dane Duke, sheriff’s department spokesman. The traffic stop happened at Riverside Drive and East County Road 400N.

Deputy Dylan Prather and his K9 partner arrived at the traffic stop and conducted a free air sniff during the traffic stop. K9 Frizko alerted to the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle, Duke said.

Deputies searched the vehicle and found narcotics and indications of drug dealing. The search yielded more than 10 grams of methamphetamine, Duke said. After her arrest McFarland admitted to concealing on her person more than 10 grams of fentanyl, Duke said.

McFarland was booked into the Bartholomew County Jail on multiple preliminary charges and a 48-hour-hold was placed on her as the investigation continues, Duke said. Charges are dealing in methamphetamine, dealing in a narcotic drug, possession of a narcotic drug, possession of a legend drug injection device, possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia.
